March 2015 Klaus Billand

Neue Merker

Das Rheingold

The young music director of the Hungarian State Opera House, Péter Halász, makes the orchestra emphasise the story-telling character of the work; with marvellously clean lines and a love for the details, his conducting contributed very significantly to the success of the evening.

Halász encouraged the musicians to produce intense solos, yet at the right moments he always found the broad arcs to reinforce the story. It was thus the music was in a very close symbiosis with the visuality of the stage. The audience of Hungarians and those who had travelled from abroad rewarded the performers – in particular Adrian Eröd, Marcus Jupither, and Péter Halász and the orchestra – with resounding applause.
