Smetana: Vltava: “Smetana’s work presented Péter Halász with the opportunity not only to prove what an intelligent and precise conductor he is, but also to demonstrate how lucidly he is able to communicate as an artist. His designs in his approach to the score of The Moldau were apparent throughout: that the spirit depicting the programme’s music should work, and that, on the one hand, history, the beauties of nature, and the poetry presenting folk life in the style of genre pictures should be realized, while on the other hand, all this should happen with a consistently executed absolute musical plasticity, which directs the attention of the audience to the stratification of the sound, the outline of the theme areas, the exact rhythms, and the interpretative accents... The musicians of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra served the concept of the intricately sophisticated performance with tangible dedication...”
Holst: The Planets: “The work is not played in Hungary and thus, with their admirably-elaborated, picturesque performance that was full of character, Halász and the National Philharmonic presented the audience with the gift of the experience of discovery. The audience rewarded them with a tumultuous response which was by no means undeserved: the rendition approached in a spirit of perfectionism made all the richness and attraction of the work consummately apparent.”
